TRANSPORT HUB
Proposals were made & submitted to the GOVSL for the Transport Hub in Pettah. Fort & Pettah area is the center of trade inclusive of wholesale and retail and business activities in the country from the beginning of the colonial era to date. Further, there are many offices & multi-storied buildings, such as World Trade Centre & many bank headquarters. Thus, the area has the highest attraction for passengers and hence connected with different transport modes, such as railways, busses, taxies & other private transport modes creating traffic congestion in the area due to the high rate of trips that are generated from and to the center.
Colombo port-related commercial activities are also a contributory factor for the transport demand. The area is highly occupied by three bus terminals, Fort Railway Station, which is one of the colonial heritages, making Fort/Pettah is the nucleus of Sri Lanka’s transportation system. In addition, the area is blessed with water bodies including Beira Lake, which has the potential for the introduction of water transport mode.
The proposed land for the MmTH is located in the south of Pettah, and north of Beira Lake in the heart of Colombo Business District. Key locations in the vicinity of the project include the existing Pettah station building, Manning market, the bus terminal of the National Transport Commission and many other small scale retail stores, covering an area of 29 Hec. (Approx.). The estimated budget for this development is 200 Million USD.
